Past Experiences and Trauma

When earlier experiences continue to shape present reactions

Some experiences leave a deeper imprint than we initially realise.

They may have happened recently, or much earlier in life. In many cases, people continued functioning well afterwards and carried on with work, responsibilities, and relationships.

Yet certain situations in the present can still bring out reactions that feel unexpectedly strong, difficult to explain, or hard to control.

For some people this may appear as heightened anxiety, emotional shutdown, sudden anger, or a sense of always needing to stay on guard. These responses are often the mind and body’s way of trying to protect against experiences that once felt overwhelming.

When the past continues to influence the present

Many people are aware that past experiences may have shaped them in some way.

At the same time, it is not always clear why certain reactions still occur in the present. Situations that appear manageable on the surface may trigger strong emotions, tension in the body, or a sense of threat that seems out of proportion to the moment.

Looking carefully at these patterns often reveals how earlier experiences may continue to influence how thoughts, emotions and physical responses unfold under pressure.

Understanding these connections more clearly can make reactions that once felt confusing begin to make more sense.

When people seek support around past experiences

People sometimes begin exploring these experiences in counselling when they notice patterns such as:

  • Feeling constantly on guard or easily startled in certain situations
  • Emotional reactions that feel stronger than expected for the situation
  • A tendency to shut down, withdraw, or feel emotionally numb
  • Persistent shame, self-criticism, or a sense of being “not good enough”
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in close relationships
  • Wanting past experiences not to shape how you show up for the people who matter to you

These experiences often develop gradually over time and may only become clearer when looking at them more closely.
