Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured counselling approach that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviour.

Many emotional difficulties are often influenced by patterns in how situations are interpreted. These interpretations can shape emotional reactions and the actions that follow.

CBT helps people examine these patterns more closely and explore alternative ways of understanding and responding to situations.

The CBT Model

CBT is based on the idea that thoughts, emotions, and behaviour influence one another.

A situation may lead to an automatic interpretation, which can then influence how someone feels and how they respond.

For example:

a situation occurs

a thought or interpretation appears

an emotional response follows

behaviour then develops in response to those feelings

Over time these cycles can become familiar patterns. CBT focuses on understanding these patterns and exploring how different responses may influence the cycle.

When CBT may be helpful

CBT is often used when someone is exploring difficulties such as:

  • persistent worry or overthinking
  • self-critical or discouraging thoughts
  • anxiety in specific situations
  • low mood or reduced motivation
  • avoidance of situations that feel uncomfortable

The approach focuses on understanding how thoughts and behaviours interact with emotional responses.

What CBT sessions involve

CBT is a collaborative and structured approach. Sessions often involve:

  • identifying patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviour
  • examining how certain interpretations influence emotional responses
  • exploring alternative ways of thinking about situations
  • experimenting with different behavioural responses in everyday life

Attention is placed on practical situations that are currently affecting daily life.

How CBT is used in counselling

CBT is often used when a structured and practical way of working feels helpful. It can be especially useful when someone wants to understand how thoughts, emotions and behaviour are influencing one another in everyday situations.

It may also be combined with other approaches depending on the concerns being explored, particularly when emotional patterns are influenced by both present thinking patterns and earlier experiences.

Starting counselling

Beginning counselling can feel like a significant step. You are welcome to arrange a short, complimentary 10-minute consultation to ask questions and explore whether this approach may feel like a good fit.
